Pioneer’s early history in Japan

A history of firsts for the Pioneer brand

It wasn’t until 1961 that Matsumoto’s company adopted the name Pioneer, through it first started laying claim to the Pioneer trademark in the 1940s, as its speaker operation expanded along to include large theater speakers, amplifiers, and — long before car stereos came along — the realm of aviation audio. 

As for when car stereos did come along, that would be November 1975, when Pioneer introduced the world's first component car stereo, the first car audio product that could amplify sound wired to discrete speakers placed around the car. It would hardly prove Pioneer’s only innovation. In October 1984, Pioneer marketed the world's first car CD player. In June 1990, it became the first to integrate a GPS navigation system for the consumer market, and in 1996, the first to include a DVD player. 

Car stereo technology has been evolving in fits and starts for well more than half a century, and Pioneer has been there to push the boundaries and forge new ground, repeatedly proving itself a good brand for car audio, every step of the way.
